History of Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple
According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that King Ugrasena of Mathura had a son named Kansa, who had a sister called Devaki. When Devaki’s wedding, Kansa heard a divine voice saying, “O Kansa, you will be killed by the eighth son of the sister you are bidding farewell to.” Hearing this, the cruel Kansa imprisoned his sister and brother-in-law. Thus, Lord Krishna was born in the prison of Mathura. It is believed that his great-grandson, Vajranath, built a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple has seen many ups and downs over the centuries. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times:-
- In ancient times, invaders attacked Mathura and damaged many temples.
-
- The Shahi Idgah Mosque was built near the Krishna Janmabhoomi site during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (17th century).
-
- In the 20th century, a new temple complex was built next to the mosque through the efforts and donations of Hindu leaders and industrialists.
